The primary objectives of EACLPP are:
• to promote the management of patients with psychiatric disorders and psychological problems in medical settings
• to promote the advance of scientific knowledge and clinical practice in the field of C-L psychiatry and psychosomatics
• to exchange information among the members of the association and to educate the general public regarding C-L psychiatry and psychosomatics
• to develop and promote standards for training and practice of C-L psychiatry and professional conduct within the field
• to provide a forum for presentation, dissemination and discussion of scientific problems in C-L psychiatry and psychosomatics through the organization of meetings, conferences, workshops and publications
The concepts of psychosomatic medicine have their roots in early philosophy and medicine, but formal beginnings go back only about 60 years. And for half of that time, the International College of Psychosomatic Medicine, founded in 1970-1971, has played an active and important educational role. Its members have represented the vitality of psychosomatic research and practice in virtually every corner of the world; its past presidents include many of the most renowned individuals in the field, such as Eric Wittkower, Mauricio Knobel, Morton Reiser, Yujiro Ikemi, Herbert Weiner, Juan Lopez-Ibor Jr., Ian Bastians, Adam Krakowski, Chase Kimball, Atara Kaplan-DeNour, Cairns Aitken, Michael von Rad, Hubert Lacey, and Don Byrne. The vision and achievement of these leaders has enhanced scholarship and a valuable exchange of ideas amongst a truly international and multidisciplinary population of psychosomatic practitioners.
